what is limit experience?

upon introduction to limit experience as a philosophical concept in 2012 when i enrolled in a “finding foucault” class my perspective on extreme life encounters shifted. in accordance with the curriculum, i read paul rabinow’s anthology, an introductory sampling of michel foucault’s work that beckoned the reader past intellectual comfort zones. beyond an experimental relationship with one’s mind, though, foucault’s approach to writing itself encouraged a kinesthetic relationship with the words. a page of text set about a labyrinthine trail-blaze across the psyche’s unmentionable sites.

foucault elaborates on his aims as an author in an interview in faubion’s power anthology; “however erudite my books may be, I’ve always conceived of them as direct experiences aimed at pulling myself free of myself, at preventing me from being the same.”
